Club Holiday – Selva Gardena

Once again, 40 of our more mature members set off from Edinburgh on a flight to Innsbruck, thence on to Selva in the Italian Dolomites.  I should clarify from the start that despite the prevailing assumption that members have to be over 60 to participate, this is not the case. To blend in however it helps if you can at fall into at least one of the following categories, look like, act like or ski like a pensioner. Happily all our party formed a cohesive group. Sadly Jean Lindsey-Bethune was unwell and unable to come on holiday.

Everyone was most impressed by the Oswald Hotel which was placed near the centre of the village and had the space and elegance of an earlier age. Even though we arrived quite late we were served a super meal and to our surprise we were given all the dishes on the menu, when we assumed we had to choose one. Even better the wine prices were reasonable as were the drinks in the large bar upstairs.

Our first day on the slopes was fragmented as usual and a few of us joined the Rep on his resort tour. The Rep proved to be an outstanding guide and organiser and certainly made our stay a pleasant experience. Needless to say that on returning that evening at least one group had completed the Sella Ronda that day.
The scenery in the Dolomites is dramatic with spiky peaks in a distinctive yellow stone. We were lucky with the weather, good snow cover and sun, the only snow falling on the last day. Most of our group completed the Sella Ronda, a 40km circular tour with detours to Corvara, Arabba and Marmolada mountain.
Unfortunately there were a number of accidents including a dislocated shoulder the most serious being a compound fractured leg suffered by Sarah-Jane DuPont on the last run of the day. She was operated on in Italy and is now recuperating at home. We all wish her a speedy recovery.
